One of the reasons we delve into Merton’s work is to gain a deeper understanding of God. Merton’s perspective, like ours, has been shaped over the past 2000 years, with a significant influence from the last 1500 years. This journey of understanding is not just a scholarly pursuit but a personal quest that resonates with each of us.
How does Merton’s work help us understand a God spanning over 13 billion years contribute to our understanding of God? Do you think this understanding is significant? And how does science, a beacon of knowledge, aid us in comprehending the divine? Does our understanding of God lead us to a deeper understanding of ourselves as humans?
Consider this: most of us with European ancestry carry traces of Neanderthal DNA. Have you ever wondered who God might have been to our Neanderthal ancestors? Did they understand “salvation?” Did they think they walked with God in their daily life?
When we study Merton, do we begin to see how God and the world are becoming something more together? The operative word is “becoming.” The question is, are we humans doing our part when we say “together?” Was Merton giving us clues on the “together” part? What are we learning from science about God that helps us understand Merton more?
Now, think about what we learn not only from Merton but also from Cardijn, Chardin, Rahner, and all the theologians of the Vatican II era. How have they helped us better understand God in a world of emerging technology? A technology that did not exist in their lifetimes, or maybe not even considered as a possibility?
Evolution has been occurring for 13+ billion years. God evolves with us, in us, and around us.
Are we, as humans, coming to know God together?
